The Okra Project is a mutual aid collective that provides support to Black Trans, non-binary, and gender-nonconforming people with the intention of alleviating some of the barriers that the community faces daily. During the Middle Passage, our African Ancestors snuck okra onto captive ships to sustain themselves and plant in the new world. Black Diasporic cooking traditions often use the okra plant for its versatility and it is often associated with health, prosperity and community.

It is in and of this same spirit that The Okra Project has positioned itself to continuously extend and create assistance through our programming and partnerships. While we are always blossoming, much like the beloved okra plant, our team is committed to finding unconventional solutions to radically support the Black Trans and GNC community.
